The Musina Local Municipality has strongly dismissed allegations that the tap water used by local residents for household purposes is contaminated with a cholera virus. This comes after romours spread like wild fire on Monday that there was an alleged outbreak of cholera in Musina. As a result, the telephone lines of the municipality were congested with calls from confused citizens who were reluctant to use the local water supply. Scores of people also visited the municipal offices to verify if the allegations were true.
Municipal spokesperson, Wilson Dzebu said the allegations are unfounded, baseless and misleading. He said apart from the romours, there was an sms circulating in Musina on Monday, warning people that if they drink the water, they would be infected with the cholera virus. “We would like to reassure our people to use our water without fear because it is clean and fit for human consumption. Our purification process is of higher standards and people should never be misled by liars who want to cause confusion in our municipality. We have no doubt that these allegations are from unreasonable people who want to dent the good image of our municipality and the good work that we are doing.” Dzebu says the municipality does water tests twice a day. “We continuously do water tests from time to time and our indications are that our water is very clean. We have experts who have been trained to do water tests and they are doing their job diligently. People should know that our main responsibility is to make sure that they are getting efficient services, including high standard water supply, without compromise. As a catalyst for efficient service delivery, we pride ourselves by the excellent services we offer to our people. People must never be misled by forces who want to disturb peace in our municipality.” In conclusion, Dzebu said the municipality will continue to provide excellent services to its inhabitants. “We will not be threatened by baseless rumour mongering because our obligation is to make sure that our people are reaping the fruits of their votes. We will continue serving them with dignity and pride.” |
