Hundreds of municipal employees, representatives from sector departments and the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) took part in the Musina Municipality Wellness Day which was held at Skoonplaas stadium lately. The event started with a 10km fun walk, followed by aerobics and several sports activities.
Municipal spokesperson, Wilson Dzebu said the annual initiative is aimed at encouraging municipal employees to lead a healthy life. “Musina Municipality takes the health of its employees as their number one priority. When you have healthy and physically fit staff members, their performance becomes good – thereby accelerating the wheel of service delivery.”
Dzebu said the annual wellness day provides intervention that will build employees’ capacity to deal with problems and allow them to take responsibility for their own health and to improve the image of the municipality within the community. He said exercise reduces the chances of being attacked by opportunistic diseases. “We encourage our employees to exercise regularly and consult health workers whenever they notice any symptoms of opportunist diseases.”
He concluded: “The annual wellness day has done a lot to promote employees wellbeing to improve productivity. We strongly believe that a health body and a health mind play a major role in the individual’s daily performance. By encouraging our employees to take part in wellness day, we drastically reduce absenteeism, sick leave and enhance the moral and stamina of the employees by educating them about health related issues.”
