A local NGO, Generation of Destiny, recently teamed up with De Beers Venetia Mine and Musina Local Municipality in organising a career guidance for Grade 12 learners at the Musina New Nancefield Community Hall. Learners who graced the occasion came from Musina, Eric Louw and Renaissance high schools.  They were motivated by representatives from the University of Limpopo, Vuwa College of Safety, government departments and the University of Venda.

Generation of Destiny chairperson, Mr Langanani Mudimeli said his organization decided to organize the career guidance to help learners to choose correct careers after completing Grade 12. He said: “Lack of career guidance is evident when the majority of these learners fail to further their education at different institutions of higher learning because they do not even know the courses available for them. We have also realized that a large number of learners are not able to pursue their studies at institutions of higher learning due to lack of career guidance at schools. We had to bring these different institutions here so that our brothers and sisters can learn about different career choices and paths.”

Mudimeli also spoke about challenges faced by learners in terms of career choices and applying spaces at universities. “Some matriculants do not have a clue about their career ambitions. Proper career guidance would assist them with early applications at different institutions of higher learning.”

One of the motivational speakers is Mr Tshilidzi Munasi, the founder and director of Vuwa College of Safety. He encouraged learners to enrol at different colleges in order to reduce the influx to the universities. “Learners need to be made aware that TVET colleges offer programmes that could drive the growth of our economy. This will help turn South Africa into a country which will no longer import skilled professionals.”
