Musina Local Municipality is situated at the northernmost part of Limpopo close to the Beit Bridge border post between South Africa and Zimbabwe. The Musina town developed around the copper mining industry in the area.
The Municipality is comprised of twelve wards and twenty-four councillors. Political parties that are represented in the municipal council are the ANC, DA, and EFF.
Major economic strengths, except diamond mining, are the many game farms and tourist attraction sites including, the Kruger National Park, the Big Tree, Musina Nature Reserve and Mapungubwe National Park. The world heritage site of Mapungubwe (meaning “Hill of Jackals”) is one of the riches archaeological sites in South Africa. Musina is known for being the region of Baobab trees and impala lilies, which are both protected species.
Cross-border trade is also an active aspect of the local economy. Musina is one of the areas that has been declared a growth point by the Provincial government. The establishment of the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) which will create approximately 19 000 jobs is a true reflection of the fact that the Municipality is growing very fast.
